Domain Scams Alert Publish Date: 26 September 2005
A large number of customers have contacted us in the past week saying
they were contacted by a company in the UK using high pressure sales
tactics for domain registrations.
What typically happens is that people receive a phone call from a
representative stating that they are aware that a third party has
placed an order for a variation of the person's company domain name.
They go on to say that they can offer it for a high price to prevent
the supposed third party getting it.
In all cases where unsolicited contact is made by email or phone using
such tactics you should contact ourselves for advice or the IIA.
As chair of the Irish Internet Association Domain Registration &
Hosting Working Group I have issued the following alert to try and
prevent people being taken advantage of in this manner:
